Apprenticeships

Variety is the spice of life and education.

For me of late, Saturday mornings have been put aside for adjudicating and marking.

Last Saturday I spent the morning going through the applications in the World Series Customer Centricity Awards and the Global greats involved. This morning I was marking the assignments for the Sales Apprenticeship participants in Ireland. ….and all were of equal importance to the World Series Awards.

There are often common threads which run through excellence. Often its simplicity.

This morning I was correcting a paper for the Apprenticeship which involved the importance of non-cognitive skills in sales , ( social skills, soft skills, essential skills, power skills)….or whatever we choose to call them.

Earlier this week I had a great call with Loralyn Mears, PhD founder of Steerus the world’s first soft skills academy and my friend and thought leader Simon Haigh, regarding soft skills.

Why are these happenings related. What did the World Series Leader say – “We need to Go Big on the small things. What are the small things – Soft Skills”

Interesting. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Soft Skills

Soft Skills is one of those names that someone soon will create a better description of because its name perhaps does not do justice to its importance. ‘Human Skills’, ‘Power Skills’ but for now Soft Skills is going to be a topic of much conversation.

I had a really interesting conversation with Loralyn Mears, PhD of the really exciting Steerus Soft Skills Academy which is based in New Jersey, my place of birth. Joining us on the Zoom call was Simon Haigh ‘The Growth Strategist’ based much nearer home, in Dublin

We had a very open chat around Soft Skills and their increasing importance in the digital disruption and experience economy where the revolution of the digital meets the increasing need for human skills.

Loralyn has a very open, transparent style and she is very insightful on the subject of Soft Skills. Steerus , in its early stage of development, promises to be a platform of note. Simon spoke about ‘Soft Power’ and its emergence as well as his work in that area. I spoke about Ireland and its ability to lead a European agenda in this crucial area of skills and training.

We ran out of time and promised to meet again really really soon. I look forward to continuing this very interesting conversation.

Culture

‘Culture does not make people – people make culture’

Thank you very much to all who contributed to the recent survey of the importance of ‘culture’ in the workplace. 85% of you opted for ‘organisation culture’ as much more important that salary, location and facilities combined.
